The Community Planning and Development mission is to plan for and coordinate growth, redevelopment, economic development, and wise and effective use of Waterford Township's natural and human resources to create a strong, safe, and pleasant community in which to live, work, and relax.

Community Planning and Development (CPD) oversees the Township’s planning, code enforcement, community development, and economic development functions.

CPD is responsible for planning functions such as reviewing rezoning requests, subdivision plats, and site plans. The Department staff assists the Planning Commission (which also acts as the Township Wetland Board) and the Zoning Board of Appeals to effectively achieve their responsibilities.

CPD is responsible for the Township’s code enforcement functions. This includes making sure that the Township zoning ordinances and other developmental codes are observed by all property owners in the Township. Efforts are also underway to increase citizen awareness of the Township’s codes and more involvement in their enforcement.

CPD manages and implements grants, such as the federal Community Development Block Grant Program, and other funding sources to provide assistance and economic opportunities to low  and moderate income areas of the Township and to implement development partnerships with the private sector. CPD also works through the Township’s Economic Development Corporation and the Building Authority (when active) to create additional economic assistance partnerships.
