NOTE: The Waterford Cable Commission is no longer accepting scholarship applications for 2016. The 2017 scholarship program will open in February 2017. Check back here for updates.
The 2016 Waterford Cable Commission Scholarship consist of $1,000 awards for four (4) residents of Waterford Township, graduating high school seniors that will attend college or a technical/vocational school, focusing on film and video arts. Scholarships are paid to the student’s school of choice and can be used either for tuition assistance, books, supplies, housing and/or meal plans.
Scholarships are given to students whose commitment to artistic achievement, in contemporary or traditional forms, is evident in the quality of their work and studies. The Cable Commission recognizes creative vision and commitment to excellence within a wide range of artistic disciplines, including students who have been academically trained and self-taught artists.

FILM and VIDEO
This category focuses on FILM/VIDEO DIRECTING, SCREENWRITING, ANIMATION, EDITING, SOUND ART and/or INTERDISCIPLINARY WORK.
WHO MAY APPLY?
• Any Waterford resident that is a current senior graduating in 2016 from an accredited high school.
• Applicants must intend to enroll in a university, community college, vocational, and/or technical school with a focus on media studies.
WHO MAY NOT APPLY?
• Non-residents of Waterford.
• Students already attending college or vocational/technical schools.
• Non-graduating seniors or underclassman.
• Immediate family members of the Waterford Cable Commission and Media Network of Waterford employees.
Waterford Cable Commission Scholarship applications are reviewed by a committee made up of three media professionals then the Waterford Cable Commission.
STUDENTS ARE SELECTED FOR SCHOLARSHIPS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
A demonstrated track record of artistic achievement and high quality work. This is the main determinant in the selection of a scholarship recipient.
Basic information such as your name and address.
Include relevant educational background and a list of achievements that reflect your artistic and academic accomplishments, such as performances, screenings, awards, commissions, and publications. Only include details that relate to your creative practice. Format as a list in reverse chronological order.
LIMIT: 7,500 characters; approx. 1,250 words
DISCIPLINE SELECTION: State the discipline that best describes the work in your application: (i.e. film/video directing, screenwriting, animation, editing, sound design or interdisciplinary work).
DISCIPLINE STATEMENT: A few words providing additional context for your discipline selection (i.e. “I am a film director making feature-length documentaries” or “I am a writer working on screenwriting.”) LIMIT: 150 characters; approximately 25 words
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: A concise snapshot of your creative practice and artistic career to date written in the third person. This serves as a brief, narrative summary of your resume. LIMIT: 600 characters max, approximately 100 words
ARTIST STATEMENT: Share your artistic passion, inspiration and vision. What motivates you to create? What are you trying to communicate? What techniques do you use? What artists or life experiences have influenced your work? Write in the first person, present tense. LIMIT: 2,500 characters max; approximately 415 words
COMMUNITY IMPACT: How does your work impact or inspire individuals and groups around you? Does your work reflect or enhance communities (i.e. artistic communities, educational communities, neighborhoods, etc.)? You may speak to the communities you impact currently or those you hope to impact in the future. LIMIT: 2,500 characters max; approximately 415 words
ALL APPLICATIONS MUST INCLUDE TWO TO SIX (2- 6) WORK SAMPLES
Work samples are the most important part of your application. Submit the highest-quality documentation possible.

AUDIO: mp3 files only
• 30MB per work sample. Can be linked or attached to application.
MANUSCRIPTS: pdf files only as an attachment to application.
• Max Pages: 20 pages per application total. The number of pages in each individual work sample may vary, but when all work sample pages are added together, the total may not exceed 20 pages.
• Max File Size: 10MB per work sample.
• Formatting: Submit written work samples on standard, 8.5” x 11” pages, in industry-standard format unless an alternate format is essential to understanding the work sample. Please include page numbers.
VIDEO: Link to YouTube, Vimeo, and/or direct link on private website only.
• Videos shall be approximately 2 ½ minutes to 5 minutes in length.
