About the Department
The mission for the Waterford Township Development Services Department is to plan for and coordinate building, redevelopment, and wise and effective land use in Waterford Township. The department has 2 main parts:
Permits & Inspections
The department reviews site plans and building plans. It issues building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits, in conjunction with conducting inspections on the work being performed.
The department processes residential rental certifications and conducts rental inspections.
The department investigates and processes complaints regarding existing structures, zoning and land use, by verifying that the Township Ordinances and other developmental codes are observed by all property owners.

The department assists the Clerk's Office with their issuance of various business licenses by ascertaining that the structure meets the requirements in both the Michigan Building Code and the Waterford Township Ordinances for the type of license being issued.
Prior to engaging in any fill work on a property, a permit must be secured and an inspection conducted to determine the effect on adjacent properties. For more information, please visit the Permits and Applications page.
Water & Stormwater Responsibilities
The Department oversees the installation of water and sewer mains, storm drains, manholes and fire hydrants. We also administers the Township's stormwater management activities. In addition, we also work closely with the Oakland County Water Resources Commission on soil erosion issues and with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality on matters involving our lakes,rivers and wetlands.
Lot Split Process
The Department is also involved the lot split process, working with the Assessing Department and works with homeowners to help them set up Special Assessment Districts to fund getting their roads paved and to deal with drainage issues.
